Cooled buried in sand for 72 hours to keep the tin from cracking.

Still Water Bell

Bell bronze is unforgiving — twenty-two percent tin, brittle as glass, and it will crack if you rush the cooling. We buried the mold in warm sand and let it come down over three days. Tuning happened afterward on the lathe, shaving the inside profile a few thousandths at a time while a machinist held a tuner to the lip. It landed on a low E-flat with a hum that runs almost eleven seconds before it fades.
